400 years ago on the site of the present convent of the Evangelismos there stood only the small church of the Evangelismos and a cell where hermits lived. This was the Hermitage of the Evangelismos.
At the beginning of the 17th century the chapel of the Evangelist Luke was built and the tower, and, within the tower, the chapel of St. Antony. The nave of the Evangelismos was also repaired, and all these works were carried out at the expense of the Hieromonk Nikiphoros Chartophylax the Cretan. He was a learned monk, he had studied at Padua and, after his studies, had come to be a monk at the Monastery of St. John the Theologian. He had piety, virtue, and calture, was a church leader, a bibliophile, repeatedly abbot, and eventually Bishop of Laodicea. This very cultured man understood the great deficiency in the education of his generation during those dark years of Turkish domination, and so he decided to found a school in the Monastery to enlighten the youngs. From 1580 to 1610 they were regularly taught ancient Greek, Latin, Philosophy and Theology. It was a school of the very highest level, forerunner of the Patmian School which was founded afterwards at the Apocalypse in 1713 by the learned Hieromonk, Makarios Kaloyeras. […]
